If you are not in line of sight of your fire totem and you use Fire Nova(https://db.rising-gods.de/?spell=1535), you will get an error that says "target not in line of sight" but your Fire Nova spell will still go on cooldown despite not doing anything.
If your fire totem is not in line of sight you should get that error and your Fire Nova spell should NOT go on cooldown.
